The Trust advertises nationally and all New Zealand based community groups with valid road safety initiatives that meet the Trust's criteria and are not fully funded from other sources are eligible to apply.
The Trust’s statement of allocation criteria is as follows:
The following information is supplied as a general guide only. There may be projects that fall outside these guidelines where the benefit to road safety would be so great that the Trust would wish to take the opportunity of funding them. If you feel your project falls into this category please contact us to discuss it.
It should be noted that large value capital items are not routinely funded by the Trust. Requests for such items will be considered on a case by case basis.

Who do I discuss applications with locally?
Applicants are encouraged to discuss their applications with their local Land Transport New Zealand Education Advisor or Road Safety Co-ordinator. These groups are in contact with existing road safety networks in the area and are aware of national and regional road safety priorities. This is important because the Trust needs to ensure that the maximum benefit is gained from each road safety dollar it spends on grants.
What about partial funding?
The Trust recognises that partial funding places additional burdens on groups that could undermine the viability of the project.
Accordingly, the majority of applications approved receive the amount requested. It is therefore important to ensure your project budget is clear and accurately reflects likely costs and projected income (if any). If applicable, please obtain and submit with your application two or three written quotations.
What do I do if I have a research application?
Guidelines for research applications are available on request. These require a more detailed level of information than the Trust application forms.
A technical advisory committee considers research applications. The committee comprises experts from relevant research disciplines. The applications are processed through a robust peer review procedure. In some cases international experts are consulted.
